China concentrated solar power pilot projects’ development

The year of 2018 witnessed the rapid growth of concentrated solar power (CSP) industry in China. Three demonstration CSP projects with the total capacity of 200MW were completed and connected to the grid, arming China with 3 large-scale commercial CSP plants in operation in one year:

  • CGN Delingha 50MW Parabolic Trough CSP project—June 30th
  • Shouhang Dunhuang 100MW Molten Salt Tower CSP project—December 28th
  • SUPCON Delingha 50MW Molten Salt Tower CSP project—December 30th

Looking at the rest of 17 demos:

6 projects with total capacity of 350MW are under construction and hopefully to be completed this year in 2019;

1 project– Shenzhen Jinfan Akesai 50MW molten salt PT Project, was stopped construction due to some financial problem;

The other 10 projects totaling 749MW capacity are now still under development, pending with little progress, mainly because of financial or internally political obstacles.

As announced and provided by China National Energy Administration two years ago in 2016, only those pilot projects which would be able to be completed by the end of 2018 could enjoy the FiT of RMB1.5 per kWh. New price policy for the others hasn’t been published officially yet till now, however, as CSP Focus reported earlier, the latter projects will be completed, the lower price will be awarded.

Looking forward to the year of 2019, the industry players are still under great pressure in finishing the construction of around 10 CSP pilot projects. It could be estimated that more CSP projects with bigger capacity will be completed this year compared with 2018, hopefully making China the No.1 emerging CSP market in the year of 2019.

At the same time, the 2nd batch of CSP pilot projects is always under great expectation. As Mr. Jin Jiangxiang, Chairman of SUPCON Solar says, the practical operation of the completed 3 CSP demos is one of the key factors for the government to decide on the 2nd batch of demos, it is a quite crucial mission and responsibility for the project developers and O&Ms to continuously optimize the operation.

To share the fresh operational situation with CSP industry players, Senior Executives from the three owners: CGN Solar, Shouhang, SUPCON Solar will be speaking during 9th Annual CSP Focus China Conference & Exhibition on Mar.21-22 in Beijing, China, and other counterparts like ACWA Power, Abengoa, EDF, TSK Flagsol, Acciona Industrial, EA, Glasspoint, Shanghai Electric will also be present, communicating the business potentials in China CSP market.
