Acwa Power plans to bid at the tender for the Noor Midelt solar power complex in Morocco.
«Our development team has been working on an offer for this project, » Badis Derradji, country manager for Morocco at Acwa Power, was quoted as saying by the Monday edition of Moroccan daily L’Economiste.
Morocco’s agency for solar power Masen launched a call for expression of interest for the development of the first phase of Noor Midelt at the start of the year.
Noor Midelt or NoorM I, as the agency calls it, will comprise one or several power plants with a hybrid technology, combining consentrated solar power (CSP) with photovoltaics (PV). The total capacity is planned at 400 MW and all phases will be developed under the independent power producer (IPP) scheme.
The Saudi company has already won the development and operation of the Noor I, II and III solar power plants at the Ouarzazate complex, as part of a consortium including also Spanish Sener, Acciona and TSK Electronica y Electricidad.
According to information of L’Economiste Noor I fed 1,700 MWh of electricity to the national grid on March 4. In a year, the complex is expected to produce 500,000 MWh with a capacity of 500 MWh per hour at the point of consumption.
The construction of Noor II and III is expected to complete by the end of 2017.
«In the coming weeks» Acwa Power is also preparing to break ground on the 120 MW Khalladi wind farm in the northern part of Morocco. The financial closure of this project was announced in November 2015 with MAD 1.3 billion (USD 132.3m/EUR 120m) loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Banque Marocaine du Commerce Exterieur (BMCE).
