Environmental authorities in Chile’s Antofagasta region (II) approved a US$608mn CSP-PV hybrid solar energy project.

The CEME 1 project comprises a 70MW CSP (concentrated solar power) plant and a 70MW photovoltaic (PV) array.

The CSP plant will boast 14 hours of thermal storage capability, allowing the complex to produce electricity around the clock.

The project was submitted by CEME1 SpA, a joint-venture between Enerstar America and a group of private Chilean investors.

CEME1 will connect to Chile’s northern SING power grid, where mining companies account for about 90% of power demand.
